Letter of thanks not found. An account of the reading of M's letter, based on a report
in the Ovens constitution, appeared in the Australasian, 4 August 1866, p. 564: 'a letter was produced which had been received from Dr. Mueller,
the superintendent of the Botanic-gardens, at Melbourne. Our worthy town clerk commenced
reading the communication, but stuck fast, not being able to make out the manuscript.
The epistle then went the round, from the mayor to every councillor present, and it
baffled them all, even Councillors Raecke and Deutschman caving in on the subject,
although the former very loudly expressed his confidence that he could tell them all
about it. This little affair created quite an agreeable excitement in contradistinction
to the usual prosy debates of our local parliament.'
