Letter not found. The text given here is from 'The Leichhardt search expedition', Herald (Melbourne), 26 July 1866, p. 3. The extract is introduced by 'Of his deceased leader, Mr. Sloman thus writes to Dr. Mueller:—'.
Duncan McIntyre, the leader of the Ladies' Leichhardt Search Expedition, died on 4 June 1866. The article also gives the text of a letter written on 2 May 1866 by McIntyre to his uncle, Donald Campbell, and two letters from Sloman to the secretary of the Ladies' Leichhardt Search Committee, dated 1 June 1866. The letter from Sloman to M would almost certainly have been written on the same day and is dated accordingly.
M sent a copy of the letter from McIntyre to Campbell to August Petermann, who published a translation in Petermann (1866) without identifying the recipient.
In Mr. M'Intyre I had every confidence, and with him I would have gone anywhere. He was a splendid bushman, and was an adept at water-hunting, an accomplishment the value of which to an explorer cannot be over-estimated.
