Sir
It is to me a most pleasing duty to inform you, that Commander Norman most kindly
permitted my Assistant, Mr E. B. Heyne, to proceed in the interest of the botanic
Garden to Tasmania, when the Victoria was dispatched by the Government to convey the
Salmon-ova to the Derwent. The obliging Captain moreover did every thing possible
to promote the object of Mr Heyne's mission, and among the important services rendered
I beg specially to point out, that Commander Norman conveyed fifty fern trees (kept
in readiness for my garden) from Hobarton to Williamstown, this consignment alone
weighing 20 tons. Indeed nothing could surpass the courtesy & urbanity & ready aid,
again displayed by the worthy commander, and though we are accustomed to such I regard
it my duty to bring in this instance the obligations under which my department is
placed to this naval officer under the special notice of the Government & more particularly
of his ministerial Chief
I have the honor to be, Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller.
The honorable Geo. Verdon, M. P.
Minister of finances & defenses.
