Der Hauptzweck dieses Schreibens, theuerer Freund, ist die Vorfrage, ob Moa Knochen in Neuseeland käuflich sind u die anderer Thiere seltner ausgestorbener Arten. Dann auch möchte ich Sie bitten mich freundlichst zu unterrichten, um welchen Preis man wohl eine Grünstein Axt der dortigen Häuptlinge kaufen könne, wenn dies überhaupt möglich.

The main purpose of this letter, dear friend, is the preliminary inquiry, whether the bones of Moa can be purchased in New Zealand, and also those of other animals of rare extinct species. Would you also be so kind to inform me for what price, if at all, one could buy a greenstone axe as used by the chieftains there.

M was seeking such an axe on behalf of the King of Sweden; see M to G. Grey, 26 May 1866.
