M's requisition was approved and returned to him on 19 December, without any further information being provided. It is not known what urgent work was required. It may have been for construction purposes: the Parliamentary vote for public works for 1865, passed on 22 March 1865, included £2000 for 'Buildings, Fences, and other works, including works for Water Supply at Botanic Gardens' (Victoria, Votes and proceedings of the Leg islative Assembly, session 1864- 5, vol. 1, p. 176).
