Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Original correspondence', Ovens and Murray advertiser, 10 February 1866, p. 3 (B66.02.04). A letter to the Editor from G. Milner Stephen,
was used to introduce M's letter. Stephen wrote ' I shall feel obliged by your giving
publicity to the enclosed letter, recently received by me from Dr Muller, F.R.S.,
the distinguished botanist; as I wish to ask the miners of this district to save such
colored stones as they may find in "washing up" their gold. …'. Stephen exhibited four cases of
mineralogical specimens at the Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne ((Intercolonial
Exhibition of Australasia (1867), p. 50).
My Dear Mr Stephen,—
The director of the minerological
department of the British Museum, Prof. Dr Mackilym,
is eager to obtain rough specimens of Australian precious stones and other interesting
minerals, for the noble collection under his charge. Allow me to bring my friend's
desire under your notice. Perhaps you would feel a pleasure to contribute occasionally
duplicates of rarities to the great national institution of Britain, by which any
gifts will be scientifically arranged and permanently appreciated. If I can render
you any reciprocity, play
command my services.
