Ich denke mir, ehrenwerther Herr, dass den Gelehrten Preussens Nachrichten über den Fortgang der Damen Expedition, die nach Leichhardts Schicksal spähet, ganz besonders willkommen sein werden; u. so sende ich dann das beifolgende Blättchen. Die muthige kleine Schaar

hätte ohne Dromedare das Innere des aussertropischen Australien nicht durchschreiten können, nachdem eine 18 monatliche Dürre das Land versengte. In den tropischen Breiten aber, wie ich aus eigner Anschauung weiss, ist der Wassermangel u das Abdörren der Vegetation nicht so allgemein, u die Forscher werden bis sie weitentlegene westliche Meridiane erreichen von den innerhalb der letzten Wochen aufgefundene weitern Spuren Leichhardts aus leichter vordringen können. Wenn nur ein paar freundliche ermuthigende Worte von Ihrem Throne oder dem Englands die edlen Damen ermunterten! Es würde eine magische Rückwirkung auf unsere Colonisten ausübe und die Subsidien leichter helfen zusammen zu bringen.

Der grösste Theil des 5. Bandes der Fragmenta ist geschrieben. In letzter Zeit habe ich die Grenzen der Compositen Gattungen vorarbeitend für Bentham's Werk fester gestellt. So bringe ich & zu zurück u ziehe viele Gattungen der Gnaphaloideen ein. In Nordostaustralien, dem einzigen reichen Gefild, das für Auffindung neuer Typen in Australien über bleibt, findet sich manches Auffallende so das Genus der Mimoseen, das bis zu 15! Pistillen hat! Mein Rapport ist erschienen u soll Ihnen demnächst gesandt werden mit den trocknen Pflanzen.

I imagine, honourable Sir, that the savants of Prussia will particularly welcome news about the progress of the Ladies' expedition, searching for the fate of Leichhardt; thus I am sending the enclosed leaflet.

Without dromedaries the courageous little group could not have crossed the interior of extratropical Australia after an 18-months' drought had scorched the land. In the tropical latitudes, however, the lack of water and the drying of the vegetation is not so general, as I know from personal experience, and the explorers will be able to penetrate more easily from the further traces of Leichhardt found during the last few weeks,

before they reach the distant western meridians. If only a few friendly and encouraging words from your Throne or that of England would cheer up the ladies! It would exercise a magical effect on our colonists and help to bring the subsidies together more easily.

The major part of the 5th volume of the Fragmenta has been written.

The last part of vol. 5 of M’s Fragmenta was published at the end of 1866; see B66.13.01.

Most recently I have established the limits of the genera of the more firmly in preparation for Bentham's work.

Bentham (1863-78). M's major analysis of the in peparation for sending the specimens to Bentham was published in B65.10.04 and B65.11.01. For discussion of the structure given to M's publications by his collaboration with Bentham, see Lucas (2003).

Thus I return and to and reduce many genera in the . In North-eastern Australia, the only remaining rich field in Australia for finding new types, much that is remarkable can still be found, such as the genus in the , which has up to 15! carpels! My report
