Theuerer Herr Professor.

Es gebricht mir diesmal an Zeit weitläufig zu schreiben; so sende ich eben doch ein paar gedruckte Blätter. M'Intyre hat das Commando übernommen u die Caravane ist seit einigen Wochen nach Bullo gegangen. Ich werde weiter berichten. Könnte nicht ein Aufruf ergehen, dass Neu Guinea occupirt u colonisirt werde, ein künftiges Reich fast so gross wie Deutschland. In seinen kühlern Bergregionen muss ein herrliches Klima walten. Die Alpen dort müssen dem Naturforscher namentlich interessant werden. Wenn nur die Unvorsichtigkeit nicht begangen wird den Eingebornen Gewehre zu geben, so könnte deren Mordlust leicht genug gezügelt werden. Wie traurig dass unser grosses Vaterland keine Colonien hat. Wäre es wirklich zu spät, solche zu begründen? Das Insular-Indien möchte doch noch Terrain dafür liefern. N. Guinea müsste ein grosses Gewürzland werden.

and the caravan has moved some weeks since to the Bullo River.

I shall send further reports. Could not an appeal be made for New Guinea to be occupied and colonised — a future domain almost the size of Germany. The climate in its cooler mountain regions must be wonderful. The alps there must be of interest, particularly to naturalists. As long as the folly is not committed of giving guns to the natives, their murderous instincts could be easily curbed. How sad that our great fatherland does not possess any colonies. Should it really be too late to establish them? The Indies might provide territory for them. New Guinea ought to become a large spice island.
