I have a clear recollection dear Sir Redmond, of the facts as narrated by Dr Wills
& find the inscription desired by the Dr in strict accordance with the statements
I heard at the time of the tragic occurrence. To me Dr Wills proposition appears both
generous & appropriate.

The inscription to which M refers was probably one proposed for the massive granite
obelisk that had been placed on the grave of the explorers Burke and Wills in the
Melbourne General Cemetery (see Bonyhady (1991), p. 250). What Dr Wills's proposition
amounted to is not known.
