M's letter was returned to him on 22 September 1865 annotated: 'If on Estimates approve'. The impact of the 1863 floods is discussed in M to J. McCulloch, 30 September 1865. M had sought funds, a year earlier, to repair at least some of the damage (M to M. Hervey 27 July 1864 (in this edition as 64-07-27a), and M to M. Hervey, 9 September 1864 (in this edition as 64-09-09b), but the outcome of those requests is not known. No explicit provision for additional funds for this purpose had been approved when funds were voted for 1865, although an amount of £250 was provided as a grant to the Horticultural Society 'in consideration of damage done by recent floods' (Victoria, Parliament, Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, session 1864-5, vol. 1, pp. 220, 221).
