M's letter was returned to him on 13 September 1865 annotated: 'to be granted on conditions stated'. It is not known what conditions were stated. The animal collection had been moved to Royal P ark several years earlier but the old Zoological Gardens remained under M's control as the 'North Ground' of the Botanical Garden. Thursday 9 November was a holiday for the Prince of Wales' s b irthday; 'many thousands' of visitors attended the fete, a dmission was one shilling, children under 10 six pence and t he charities to benefit were 'the Melbourne Hospital, the Benevolent Asylum, and the Orphanages' ( Argus , 10 November 1865, p. 4). The sports program me was not completed on 9 November and was resumed on Saturday 11 November, with free admission ( Age (Melbourne), 11 November 1865, p. 8; Herald (Melbourne), 13 November 1865, p. 2).
