Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Leichhardt', Queensland daily guardian, 18 July 1865, p. 2 (B65.07.05). An introductory sentence indicates that Landsborough had forwarded M's letter, 'just received', to the paper for publication.
I write these hurried lines, dear Mr. Landsborough, merely with a view of removing an erroneous impression, which may have been left on the public, that the subsidy of £500 promised by our Government was withdrawn.

The Brisbane courier, 1 July 1865, p. 5, had reported in telegraphic news from Melbourne that 'Mr. M'Culloch, the [Victorian] Treasurer, has stated that as the New South Wales Government, whilst being most interested, have refused to subscribe towards the Leichhardt Search Fund, the Victorian Government will not grant any vote'. This was a report of the discussion in the Victorian Parliament on 29 June: see Victorian Hansard, vol. 12, p. 1073.
The fact is that, nemine dissentiente,

the vote was agreed to in the Assembly, and that the Government merely pro forma will place the sum on the supply estimates.

See 'The Leichardt Expedition', report of debates 5 July 1865, Victorian Hansard, vol. 12, p. 1114, where the mover of the motion, George Harker, pointed out that the Governments of Queensland and South Australia had promised definite amounts, and that NSW would double the private subscriptions raised.
With most friendly remembrances, yours,
F. Mueller.
