Letter not found. The text given here is from 'The Ladies Leichhardt Search Expedition',
Argus, 25 July 1865. p. 5 (B65.07.07), published with G. Sandeman to M, 21 July 1865 (in
this edition as 65-07-21b). Both letters were republished, under the same heading, in the Australasian, 5 August 1865, p. 15 (B65.08.05).
It is but just that the very handsome manner in which the Government and Legislature
of Queensland have acted in supporting the ladies' inquiry into Dr. Leichhardt's fate
should be rendered fully known. May I therefore beg of you to insert in The Argus the following communication from Mr. Gordon Sandeman, the gentleman who, in great
benignity, exercised his Legislative influence in securing the large subsidy placed
on the Estimates by the Queensland Government for the new inquiry into Leichhardt's
fate?
Unless the great north-eastern colony of Australia had promptly tendered this extensive
aid, the ladies could not have sent out their expedition during this season. It is
significant, also, that the generous champion of Leichhardt in the House of Assembly
at Brisbane is a most intimate friend of the justly celebrated explorer, Augustus
Gregory.
With deep obedience, yours,
FERD. MUELLER.
