Mein verehrter Herr Professor.
Mit dem Schiffe "Sussex" habe ich bereits vor 2 Wochen an Dr Sonder in Hamburg eine
Kiste mit Pflanzen abgesandt, die neben einer Anzahl Pflanzen für Ihre Sammlung noch
ein paar Bücher für Ihre wissenschaftlichen Vereine enthält so wie den 4 Band meiner
Fragmenta u einen Band Lithogramme hier einheimischer Pflanzen für Sie selbst. — Sie
sehen wenigstens, dass inmitten mancher Anforderungen an meine Zeit ich Ihrer u Ihrer
schönen Anstalten nicht ganz vergesse. — Ich hätte wohl mehr für Sie u andere Freunde
der Wissenschaft gethan, aber die Ausrüstung der Expedition der Damen für Leichhardts
Aufsuchung hat meine Mussestunden reichlich in Anspruch genommen.
Für Sie und die Herren v. Haidinger u v. Hochstetter wird es jedoch erfreulich sein
zu hören, dass durch den regen Eifer der Vertreterinnen dieser edlen Sache es möglich
ward, die Parthie bereits zu organisiren, so dass selbige noch in diesem Monat ins
Feld ziehen wird. Sie besteht aus 8 Personen, unter dem Befehl von Mr Duncan M'Intyre;
ein Arzt, Dr J. Murray, der gleichfalls als Naturforscher wirken wird, ist ihr beigegeben,
derselbe der Howitt begleitete. Sie wird für 2 Jahre ausgerüstet sein u sollte bis
dahin das Geschick des verschollenen Reisenden nicht erkundet sein, so wird die Parthie
reorganisirt u von Neuem ausgesandt werden.
Was wir bedürfen ist freundliche Ermunterung u Zurede von den Männern des Wissen in
Europa, um die Apathie zu vernichten, welche hier in weiten Kreisen das Unternehmen
von reichen Ansiedlern ungefördert lässt. Sollte Leichhardt weit in den grossen Westen
des Continents vorgedrungen sein, dann mag es wohl mehr denn einer Reise bedürfen,
um sein Geschick zu enthüllen. Dann wird aber auch die Aufgabe gelöst werden, welche
der Arme sich gestellt, auf das Innere des Westens Licht zu werfen. Jedenfalls können
wir neben der Erfüllung des menschenfreundlichen Zweckes der Damen auch darauf rechnen,
dass die geographische Karte sehr erweitert u dass die Naturkunde Australiens durch
dieser Expedition in mehr[...]
Weise gefördert werde.
Leichhardt oder irgend einen seiner Begleiter lebend zu finden ist eine Hoffnung der
wir uns kaum hingeben dürfen, obwohl ihre Erfüllung nicht im Reiche der Unmöglichkeit
liegt, aber die Trümmer der Expedition zu finden ist bei gehöriger Nachfrage bei den
eingeborenen Stämmen u bei beharrlicher Umsicht eine Aufgabe die mit Sicherheit gelöst
werden kann. Die edlen Frauen Victorias werden noch eine Weile sammeln müssen, um
für die Unternehmung den vollen Fond zusammen zu bringen, obgleich Südaustralien,
Victoria u Queensland Regierungs Subsidien liefern werden.
Der Name einiger Gelehrter Österreichs wird auf neue geographische Localitäten übertragen
werden.

My dear Professor,
Already two weeks ago I dispatched a case with plants to Dr Sonder in Hamburg by the
ship "Sussex". Besides a number of plants for your collections it contains a few books
for your scientific societies, as well as the 4th volume of the Fragmenta and a volume
of lithograms of the locally indigenous plants
for you personally. At least you will see, that in the midst of many other demands
on my time I do not completely forget you or your fine institutes. — I would have
done more for you and other scientific friends, but fitting out the ladies' expedition
for the search for Leichhardt has largely claimed my spare hours.
It will be pleasing for you, von Haidinger, and von Hochstetter to hear, that thanks
to the eager zeal of the representatives of this noble cause it has been possible
already to organize the party, so that it will depart this month. It consists of 8
persons under the command of Mr Duncan McIntyre; a doctor, Dr J. Murray, who will
also function as naturalist, has been included, the same who accompanied Howitt. It
will be equipped for two years and if the fate of the missing traveller has not been
discovered by then, the party will be re-organized and sent out again.
What we require is sympathetic encouragement and exhortations from the men of science
in Europe, to crush the apathy that leaves the enterprise without support in wide
circles among the wealthy settlers. Should Leichhardt have penetrated far into the
vast West of the continent, it might require more than one expedition to reveal his
fate. But that would at the same time accomplish the task that the poor man had set
himself, of throwing light on the interior of the West. In any case, apart from the
ladies' philanthropic purpose, we can also count on it that the geographical map will
be greatly extended and Australian natural science will be advanced in [...] measure
by this expedition.
To find Leichhardt or one of his companions still alive is a hope we can hardly dare
to entertain, although its fulfilment does not lie in the realms of the impossible,
but to find remnants of the expedition is a task that can certainly be accomplished
by thorough questioning of aboriginal tribes and indefatigable searching. The noble
ladies of Victoria will need to continue their collecting for some time yet to accumulate
the required funds for the enterprise, even though South Australia, Victoria, and
Queensland will provide government subsidies.
The names of some of Austria's scientists will be attached to new geographical features.
