Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 20. March, in which
you inform me, that his Excellency Governor Hampton has been pleased to forward to
me specimens of the poison-plants of your colony, on which I was desirous to experiment.
In reply I beg to express to his Excellency my grateful acknowledgement for the friendly
attention to my request & beg to promise to subject these plants to a rigorous examination
with a view of testing their medicinal effect on the human frame and on animals, in
the latter case with a view of discovering antidotes. The chemical analysis of the
plants may also reveal interesting facts. The specimens transmitted will not pass
into my hands until after the arrival of the Madras In Sydney.
I shall consider it my duty to report to his Excellency the results of my investigations
when concluded.
