The file includes a letter from the Chief Secretary's office to the Treasurer, G.
Verdon, 26 August 1864:
Sir
I am directed by the Honorable the Chief Secretary to state that he would be glad
if you would arrange to make an advance of about thirty pounds to the Director of
the Botanic Gardens in order to facilitate his obtaining a large quantity of the seeds
of the different varieties of Australian forest trees for planting tracts of land
in the Madras Presidency. Not anticipating that you will make any difficulties in
supplying the requisite funds Mr McCulloch has acquainted His Excellency the Governor
to whom Sir William Denison wrote on the subject that he may assure His Excellency
that this Government will render all assistance in its power towards making the project
successful.
