Melbourne, bot. Garden
25/2/65.
It affords me, dear Professor Parlatore, great pleasure, to announce that a case with algae, mostly but crudely dried, is in readiness to be sent to you pr "Great Britain" in the middle of next month. It will be adressed to the Italian Consul General in London, according to arrangements with the Chevalier Biagi and be free of expense so far. I presume you will arrange for the transit expenses from there to Florence, which I have no means of defraying here. The case is large, so that out of this material many thousand algae can be prepared. I have some Emus ready for sending, but a passengership like the Great Britain cannot take these birds. I hope you received rightly my woodcollection & various consignments of books & plants.
1
See M to F. Parlatore, 24 November 1864 (in this edition as 64-11-24b) for the wood specimens, and M to F. Parlatore, 24 August 1864, for books. No mention has been found of plants sent to Parlatore before the date of this letter.
I beg to enclose some lines on poor Leichhardt's fate.
2
Enclosure not found; it was probably one of the many versions of M's lecture of 9 February 1865, published in Age (Melbourne), 10 February 1865, p. 7 (B65.02.01), and widely published in full or in summary in other newspapers, including a German-language version in Germania (Melbourne), 23 February 1865, pp. 908-9.

is likely to be supported. I solicit your patronage in giving this novel, romantic & philanthropic movement your support, as European influence will second the efforts of the Ladies here, & will secure for them subsidies from the united Australian Governments as well as from the colonists.
