Melbourne, 20th February, 1865.
Dear Sir,
Mr Hodgkinson has requested me to forward for your inspection the enclosed branchlets
of the Araucaria excelsa, and Bidwillii, and to inform you that many of the trees
of those and other varities of the Araucaria, in the public reserves are presenting at the extremities of the foliage,
the withered appearance indicated by these specimens.
The trees so affected at this period are in situations apparently adapted to their
growth and have been well irrigated.
Mr Hodgkinson will be glad to be informed of the cause of this appearance on the trees
in question, if you can account for it, and will be obliged by your favoring him with
your opinion whether trees so affected are likely to be permanently injured, and,
with any suggestion you may have to offer as to treatment to be adopted for preventing
such an appearance on these valuable trees.

I remain.
