Melbourne Botanic Garden,
February 11. 1865
Sir,
Having observed by the public prints
that the City Council have determined upon letting the grazing of the southern portion
of Yarra Park, I have the honor to request that you will cause to be reserved a right
of passage for carts at all times into the Northern portion of the Botanic Gardens
situate adjoining to Yarra Park and to which portion of the Botanic Gardens it is
not possible to enter with carts by means of the public road unless by passing through
a part of the Yarra Park
1
At its meeting of 30 January 1865, the City Council agreed to a report of the Health Committee to lease the southern
portion of Yarra Park for six months (Age
(Melbourne), 31 January 1865, p. 7); tenders for a six-month lease were invited by
advertisement in
Argus, 7 February, 1865, p. 3 and reinserted on 8 February, 11 February and 14 February.
I have also the honor to bring under your notice the fact that (3½) three and a half
acres or thereabouts of the ground proposed to be let by the City Council, has been
granted by the Goverment for the extension of the northern portion of the Botanic
Garden before named and that it is my intention to have the said piece of ground fenced
in during the ensuing three months
2
E. FitzGibbon to M, 1 March 1865 is the reply.
I have the honor
to be Sir
Your most obdt Servt
Ferd. Mueller.
E. G. Fitzgibbon Esqr
