Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Dr. Mueller', Cornwall chronicle (Launceston, Tas.), 28 January 1865. p. 4 (B65.01.02). It is introduced by 'We mentioned a short time since [11 January 1865, p. 4] that the Launceston Gardeners' and Amateurs' Horticultural Society had elected Dr. Mueller the Government Botanist of Victoria as the first honorary member of the Society, and the following interesting letter is his reply to that of Mr Hannaford intimating that this honor had been conferred on him.'
Botanic Gardens, of Melbourne,
15th January, 1865.
Dear Mr Hannaford,—
Your communication announcing that the Horticultural Society assigned to me an honorary seat in its flourishing union,
2
S. Hannaford to M, 4 January 1865.
has been to me the source of deep gratification, and calls for my warmest thanks. If on my path in this life I met but little of social pleasures and recreations, I have been amply recompensed by the friendly recognition, I fear but little deserved, which kindred spirits have to me so gracefully extended, and which never failed to react encouragingly on my labours.
The distinction conferred on me by the Tasmanian Society adds another to the many ties by which I feel myself permanently connected with the kind hearted people of this great southern land. Permit me to assure the Gentlemen, with whom for the advancement of horticulture you are associated, that I shall regard it ever a privilege to share in their exertions and to aid in their labours, and that my services may be commanded by them at any time without hesitation.
Wishing that the Society may uninterruptedly enjoy that flourishing prosperity to which while you have been its principal functionary, it has arisen, I remain, with the most friendly regard.
Yours,
Ferd. Mueller.
To S. Hannaford, Esq., Hon. Sec. of the Launceston Gardeners' and Amateurs' Horticultural Society.
