Melbourne bot. Garden,
8/1/65.
To his Worship the Mayor of Melbourne
1
George Wragge.
Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to permit the small portion
of the fence across the road along the Yarra at the Garden bridge to remain standing
on the condition, that I supply spacious gates for it and keep these open during day
hours. My object in making this application consists in protecting the fine willows
planted by me along the Yarra under the sanction of the City Council. In the event
of the fence being removed, cows would immediately have ingress to the riverside and
the trees certainly be destroyed. Formerly the Willows were protected at a considerable
expense by special fencings, but these were entirely swept away by the floods in December
1863.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller, M.D.,
Director of the botanic Garden.
