Melbourne bot. Garden,
10/12/64.
Dear Capt. Standish.
Mr Geo Milner Stephen of Beechworth writes to me to day,
offering to send two or three small animals to Melbourne for the botanic Garden,
if your kind permission of their being forwarded by the police van could be obtained.

Would you kindly taken this into favorable consideration?

Standish forwarded M's letter to Superintendent F. Winch 'who if he sees no objection
of any kind to this request being complied with, can forward the animals when received
from Mr Milner Stephen. That gentleman will of course make arrangements for the packing,
feeding &c of the said animals. Mr Winch will be good enough to request the Escort
officers to cooperate in this matter, more especially as Mr Winch is well aware that
Dr Mueller has always been most obliging to our Department in supplying trees, plants
&c for our Reserves.' On 2 February 1865 Winch reported: 'The animal was sent by Escort
yesterday en route to Melbourne — perhaps Mr Bookey would sent it out to the Botanical
Gardens'. Bookey duly forwarded the animal to M on 8 February along with M's original
letter which M 'Returned with best thanks for the service rendered'.
Most regardfully
yr
Ferd Mueller
