In 'Notes and queries', Australasian, 5 November 1864, p. 8, 'Inquirer' asked whether 'any of your botanical readers can give a list of the terrestrial orchids in the neighbourhood of Melbourne, and the places where they are likely to be found?'
Dr. Mueller has favoured us with the subjoined number of orchids growing in the vicinity of Melbourne, according to a list published September, 1863,

Typesetter's error for September 1853?; see B53.10.01 (which is dated September 1853 on the cover), pp. 18-19. The nature of the misprints in the list suggests that M supplied a handwritten extract, rather than a copy of the published report. M clearly updated his data, with an increase in the numbers of some genera over those recorded in the source document (for example, B53.10.01 includes two species and three Pterostylis species) and the mention of genera not in B53.10.01. A decrease in the number of may be because one of the two species M recorded for Victoria was not found near Melbourne.
