On 13 October 1864, the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Survey, C. Hodgkinson, wrote to McCulloch:
'Adverting to the correspondence which has recently taken place relative to supply from the Botanical Gardens of 500 Californian Pines and Cypresses,
and 500 ordinary Pines for planting during 1865 in the reserves vested in the Board of Land and Works, I have the honor to state that
the proposal of Dr Mueller to furnish during the ensuing year the number and descriptions of trees mentioned in my letter of the 12th ulto
(with the substitution of 250 Himalaya Pines for a similar number of Californian Pines)
will be quite satisfactory, and the suggested transmission through your Department
of all requisitions for supplies from the Botanical Gardens, will, in future, be duly
observed. The requisite arrangements and preparation for the reception in the reserves
for which they are required, of the promised supplies will be made and proceeded with
in the meantime.' The Under Secretary, J. Moore, forwarded Hodgkinson's letter to
M for his 'information' on 14 October.
In C. Hodgkinson to M, 12 September 1864, Hodgkinson expressed disappointment at having to purchase some exotic trees from commercial nurseries
and indicated his needs for 1865. Hodgkinson's letter quoted above is evidently the result of negotiations between him and M, possibly involving Moore, but no other record of them has been
found.
Ferd. Mueller.
