Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to sanction the printing of
a small pamphlet (of not many sheets) at the Governments Printing Office on the plants
of the Chatham Islands.
The material for this essay has been presented to the botanic Museum of Melbourne
by L. Travers Esq of Christchurch, New Zealand, by whom at a considerable expense
it was accumulated. As the Chatham Islands are a British possession and a dependency
of New Zealand and as any light thrown on their hitherto almost unknown native productions
cannot fail to be guiding to results advantageous to British people, and as moreover
such elucidation will be creditable to Victorian science, I humbly beg that you will
take my request into favorable consideration.

On 9 June 1864 McCulloch minuted: 'The Government Printing Office is fully employed,
and I am quite sure that Mr Ferris [i.e. Ferres] could not at present undertake the
work. Besides there is no vote under the control of the Government, unless it be in
Dr Muellers department from which the expenditure could be taken— if Dr Ms vote will
meet the outlay necessary I have no objection.'
