The text given here is from a report of the meeting of the Launceston Municipal Council
held on 2 May 1864, Cornwall chronicle
(Launceston, Tas.), 4 May 1864, p. 3.
The Mayor said he had received from Mr Hannaford, Secretary to the Gardeners' and
Amateurs' Horticultural Society, a letter of which the following is a copy:—
Launceston, 2nd May, 1864.
Sir,— I have the honor to inform you that on application to Dr Fred. Mueller,
the Government Botanist of Victoria, he has with much kindness and liberality forwarded
to me per 'City of Launceston,' for the Launceston Public Gardens, 3 cases containing
200 plants, taken from the open ground nursery of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, and about 150 plants in pots, chiefly conifers.

These plants I have seen, with the assistance of Mr Quin, carefully unpacked, and find that they
have arrived without any injury,— and being carefully and judiciously selected (although
without either the stock or the requirements of the garden being known), are likely
to prove useful in planting out at this season of the year. I shall feel obliged if
your Worship will have the receipt of these plants acknowledged in the Council to Dr Fred. Mueller, to whom I will also write,
advising him of their safe arrival.

I remain, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Saml Hannaford.
The Council authorised the Mayor to pay the freight and charges on the cases and thankfully
acknowledge to Dr. Mueller their receipt in good order.
