Verehrter Freund!
Aus dem beifolgenden Blatte werden Sie ersehen, dass wir in Australien theilnehmend das Geschick der nordafrikanischen Expeditionen verfolgen.
Wenn doch nur jene ungeheueren Aufopferungen, welche in dem unglücksschwangeren nordamerikanischen Kriege vergeudet werden, dem Continente Africas zugewandt wäre, dann hätte sich die Obwalt des caucasischen Race über ganz Afrika geltend machen können u während die Wissenschaft in dem am versprechendsten Lande ihre Schätze einsammeln würde, könnte nicht länger diese grause Tyrannei in Dahomey, Waday u all diesen Barbarenstaaten walten. Es ist wirklich entwürdigend für unser Zeitalter, dass Afrika in solcher Finsterniss versunken bleibt!
Ich will es versuchen noch weitere Subsidien herbei zu schaffen. Persönlich habe ich gethan was ich helfend zu leisten vermochte. Ihre Mittheilungen werden stets willkommen sein um das Interesse an den edlen Unternehmungen wach zu halten.

From the enclosed paper you will see, that we here in Australia follow the fate of the North-African expeditions with sympathy.

On 27 January 1864 M sent a letter and an extensive report by Petermann, Kölnische Zeitung, 30 October 1863, to the editor of the German language Melbourne newspaper Germania, who published it in his paper on 4 February 1864.
If only those enormous sacrifices, which were wasted in the unfortunate North American war,

were spent on the African continent, the rule of the caucasian race could have asserted itself over the whole of Africa, and while science would collect her treasures in the most promising land, this horrible tyranny could no longer hold sway in Dahomey,

and all these barbarous states. It is really undignified for our times, that Africa should remain submerged in such darkness!
I shall try and bring in further subsidies. I personally have done all I am capable of doing. Your Mittheilungen will always be welcome to keep interest for this noble enterprise alive.
