editorial addition.
Sir
I have the honor to inform you that yesterday a gang of workmen & Mr Smith Contractor
commenced throwing down the Royal Park fence in the neighbourhood of the manure depôt
previous to the commencement of a building which will encroach considerably on the
Park.
The men state that they are acting under the authority of the Board of Land & Works
consequently I await your instructions before taking any steps. The fence which is
being pulled down the contractor removes such being as he states his agreement with
the Government. It would otherwise be very useful in repairing the fence in other
places.

The building to be erected was a powder magazine; see M to M. Hervey, 27 January 1864 (in this edition as 64-01-27i).
I have the honor to be

Your most Obedt Servant
