The letter is dated to January 1864 as the latest date that it could have been written: the fastest passage time from Port Louis, Mauritius, to Melbourne recorded in early 1864 was Robert Passenger, from 21 January to 25 February, 'Shipping Intelligence', Argus, 25 February 1864, p. 4.
