Letter not found. The text given here is from Bulletin de la Société impériale zoologique d'acclimatation, series 2, vol. 1 (1864), p. 148. The letter is dated to December 1863 as the latest
likely date that it could have been written and been reported by Ramel to the meeting
of the Society held on 5 February 1864.

Ramel: the earlier part of the summary is concerned with his offer of seeds of Japanese
early wheat.

to him that Australian Emus
would easily reproduce in France if they were placed in parks where thickly vegetated
hills would be provided for them.]

'Casoar' denoted both ‘cassowary’ and ‘emu’ in the early 19th century. Here, it must
mean ‘emu’ since the Australian cassowary was not yet known to science.
