vom 12. des Monats.
erhalte ich eben gleichzeitig mit einem Schreiben v. Hr. Travers, u so bin ich denn mit Freude erfüllt die Aussicht zu haben auf die Vegetation der Chatham Inseln Licht zu werfen. Möge es dem jungen Manne wohl ergehen u ihm kein Unglück begegnen! Es würde mir ein schrecklicher Gedanke sein, durch mein Mahnen zur Erforschung dieser Inseln irgend einen Unfall herbeigeführt zu haben.
Möge die Reise denn recht erfolgreich ausfallen, um für die edle Aufopferung, welche sowohl Vater u Sohn bringen, ein Aequivalent zu liefern. Ich erhielt Ihren amtlichen Bericht, der wie Alles was Sie schreiben Ihnen Ehre macht.
Wenn ich Herrn Travers noch in irgend einer andern Weise eine Aufmerksamkeit erweisen als dadurch dass ich ihm volle Gerechtigkeit widerfahren lasse in der Bearbeitung der Pflanzen u die eine oder andere der besseren neuen nach ihm benenne?
Ich sage Ihnen meinen innigen Dank für Ihre Güte, mich wieder in Ihr gastfreundliches Haus einzuladen, eine Einladung der ich früher oder später entsprechen werde, obwohl es mir diesen Sommer nicht möglich sein wird, da wenn ich überhaupt von Hause sein kann, ich noch ein paar Wochen in Victoria durchforschen möchte. Vielleicht gehe ich nach Europa u dann bleibt freilich keine Zeit übrig zu australischen Excursionen.
Bis jetzt habe ich nichts von dem Erscheinen von Hochstetters Werk gehört, u da es in den Händen eines Verlegers ist, möchte ich es nicht beanspruchen. Meine Correspondenz mit diesem versprechenden Gelehrten ist sehr ins Stocken gerathern. Wir haben beide zu viel zu thun in verschiedenen Disciplinen, um unsere Correspondenz ordentlich aufrecht zu erhalten.
Mit meinem speciellen Collegen, Prof. Dr Fenzl in Wien, bin ich jedoch in stetem regem Verkehr.

Eine kleine Sammlung Sämereien wurde Ihnen gegen Ende vorigen Monats zugesandt für den Garten Ihrer Gemahlin. Die Blumenzwiebeln sind freilich nur im Herbst vertheilbar.

Your dear letter of the 12th inst. has just arrived together with a missive from Mr Travers.

As a result I am filled with joy over the prospect of being able to throw light on the vegetation of the Chatham Islands. May the young man fare well and no misfortune befall him! It would be a terrible thought for me, to have brought about some accident as a result of my urging the exploration of these islands.
May the voyage then prove very successful to provide due compensation for the noble sacrifices made by both father and son.

I received your official report; it does you credit, like everything you write.

Can I do anything for Mr Travers other than that I do him justice in my work on the plants and name one or the other of the more notable new plants after him?
I thank you sincerely for your kindness in repeating your invitation to your hospitable home, an invitation I shall avail myself of sooner or later, although it will not be possible this summer. If I get away at all, I would like to do a few weeks of further exploration in Victoria. Perhaps I shall go to Europe, and of course there will be no time left for Australian excursions then.
So far I have heard nothing about the publication of Hochstetter's work,

and as it is in the hands of the publisher, I would not like to make any demands on it. My correspondence with this promising scientist has come very much to a halt. Both of us have too much to do in different disciplines to maintain a proper correspondence.
With my particular colleague Professor Dr Fenzl in Vienna I am, however, in constant lively communication.

A small collection of seeds was sent to you towards the end of last month for the garden of your wife. The flowering bulbs are, of course, only available in autumn.
