Letter not found. The text given here is from the section headed 'The soil for cotton growing' in the unsigned article, 'Manual of the cotton plant and cotton growing. No. II.', Yeoman, and Australian acclimatiser , 31 October 1863, p. 73. The first part of the article had been published in the previous issue of the newspaper, on 24 October 1863, pp. 56-7.

The extract is two paragraphs from 'Porters Tropical Agriculturist, pp. 8 and 9', i.e. G. Porter (1833); either M or the author of the article omitted several sentences in the first paragraph quoted.
