Verehrter Herr Doctor.

Ich habe Ihnen für zwei weitere Berichte über die nordafrikanische Expedition meinen Dank abzustatten; selbige sind hier in engl. u. deutsche Blätter übergegangen. Mit dem Schiff Monarch, welches am 9. September von hier nach London segelte sandte ich Ihnen mehrere geographische Documente, grossentheils aus unserem Regierungsbureau, u zum Theil von dem Privatsecretair des Gouverneurs herbeigeschafft, von Herrn Will. Wadsworth. Ich habe nur 1 Exemplar von Proeschels Atlas gehabt, welches ich an die geographische Gesellschaft von Darmstadt sandte, durch welche Ihnen selbiges zeitweilig wohl zugänglich sein wird. Ich muss offen gestehen, u Sie werden meine Freimuth verzeihen, dass ich etwas Bedenken trug Ihnen jetzt gleich den Atlas direct zu senden, da Proeschel mehrere Thausend Pfunde Sterling auf die Bearbeitung verwandte u selbst den Verkauf in Europa bewerkstelligen will. Indessen da Ihr Atlas in deutscher Sprache erscheint, können Sie wohl kein Bedenken tragen, von Proeschels Arbeit, die alle Anerkennung verdient, Gebrauch zu machen. Die Charte von Gipps Land mit manchen meiner neuen Positionen wird Ihnen gefallen oder doch nützlich sein. Es gelang mir nicht im vorigen Jahr meine Packpferde durch das dichte wilde Waldgestrüpp zu bringen um die Triangulation der westlichen Alpen zu vollenden. Si fata veluit geschieht es diesen Sommer.

Bis jetzt ist der "Johannes" mit Ihren werthvollen Geschenken nicht angelangt.

I had only one copy of Proeschel's atlas,

which I sent to the Geographical Society of Darmstadt, who, I am sure, will be pleased to make it temporarily available to you. I must openly confess, and you must forgive my candour, that I had some misgivings about sending the atlas directly to you immediately, as Proeschel spent several thousand pounds sterling on the work and intends to organise its sale in Europe himself. However, as your atlas will be published in the German language, you probably need have no scruples to make use of Proeschel's work, which merits every approbation. You will like the map of Gippsland with many of my new positions or at least find it useful. I did not succeed last year to get my pack horses through the dense wild undergrowth of the forest to complete my triangulation of the western alps.

Johannes left Hamburg on 8 July 1863 but did not arrive in Melbourne until 22 November ('Shipping Intelligence', Argus , 23 November 1863, p. 4).
