Sir
In returning the correspondence annected
1
annexed?
I have the honor to report, that arrangements satisfactory to all have been made in reference to the path-lines through the botanical and adjoining reserve.
2
See also T. Lightfoot to M, 1 September 1863.
The honorable the Chief Secretary, in perusing the attached letter from Mr Perry, will perceive that the expressions used by that Gentleman in his former communication were not justified.
3
On 4 September Perry wrote to the Chief Secretary, James McCulloch: 'On perusing the correspondence referring to this matter on the invitation of Dr Mueller I find that the reply which the Memorialists received, in conjunction with the immediate breaking up, which occurred of a portion of the path a second time were erroneously deemed to afford sufficient grounds for animadversions on that gentleman's intentions which it is now evident were uncalled for. Such being the case it is but just to exonerate Dr Mueller and I do so the more readily as I believe that the route which has now been decided upon will give general satisfaction'. For Perry's earlier communication, see J. Perry to J. McCulloch, 8 August 1863 (in this edition as M63-08-08).
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller.
J. Moore Esq. & & &
