Theuerer Freund

In einer späten Stunde richte ich diese Zeilen an Sie, um Sie nochmals zu bitten, sollte es irgend in Ihrem Bereiche liegen, doch womöglich in nächster Jahreszeit etwas für die botanische Erforschung der Chatham Insels zu bewirken. Ich habe nämlich meine Reise nach Europa bis zum Februar postponirt, u würde so gern vorher das Material für eine Abhandlung über die Vegetation dieser Inseln, die pflanzen-geographisch so interessant sein muss, zusammenbringen. Wenn es Ihnen nicht möglich ist etwas zu thun, so bitte ich Sie mich wissen zu lassen, wie ich einen Sammler am vortheilhaftesten sende. Ich bin ziemlich sicher, dass wenn nicht schon in dieser jedenfalls in der nächsten Jahreszeit uns ein anderer Sammler zuvor kommen wird.

Bitte grüssen Sie Hr Travers u bemerken Sie, dass seines Freundes Wünsche Vögel u.s.w. von uns zu erhalten berücksichtigt werden sollen, sobald ich eine sichere Gelegenheit finden kann selbige zu senden.

Dear friend,

At a late hour I am directing these lines to you, to beseech you once more, if possible to do something about the botanical exploration of the Chatham Islands in the next season, should that lie at all within your reach. I have postponed my journey to Europe until February, and would really like to bring together the material before then for a paper on the vegetation of these islands, which must be so interesting phyto-geographically.

If it is impossible for you to do something, I ask you to let me know the most advantageous way of sending a collector there. I am fairly certain, that another collector will forestall us, if not already in this then in the next season.

Please give my regards to Mr Travers and tell him that the wishes of his friend to obtain birds &c from us will be taken into consideration as soon as I can find a safe opportunity to send them.
