Melbourne botanic Garden,
30. May 1863
Sir
In reply to your circular N. 1895
1
Circular not found.
I have the honor to inform you, that no alteration has taken place in the number of my securities for the Government, but that Captain Andrew Clarke has left this country.
2
The security was an insurance policy, required of those who handled money or approved expenditure.
If the adopted regulations render it necessary to substitute for the name of that Gentleman one who is resident in Victoria, I shall not fail to do so, whenever your intimation on this subject will reach me.
I have the honor to be,
Sir
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller.
The honorable the Chief Secretary.

On 4 June 1863 the Under Secretary, J. Moore, referred M's letter to the Treasurer for his opinion. The Under Treasurer, E. Symonds, replied on 16 June: 'Dr Mueller originally gave three sureties As Drs Howitt and Wilkie are still in the colony and Capt Clarke in receipt of a pension from it, there appears to be no reason to disturb existing arrangements'. M to J. O'Shanassy, 1 May 1858 (in this edition as 58-05-01a), reports the original arrangements for M, the Clerk (Carl Wilhelmi) and the Curator (John Dallachy).
