Letter not found. For the text given here, see 'Acclimatisation', the report of the meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria held on 7 July 1863, Farmers' journal and gardeners' chronicle, 11 July 1863. The letter is dated to May as the latest date that it is likely to have been written, based on the journey time of Auckland, departed Cape of Good Hope 31 May 1863, arrived Melbourne 6 July 1863 (Argus, 7 July 1863, p. 4). The correspondent is identified as Edgar Leopold Leyard, curator of the Museum at the Cape of Good Hope and an active ornithologist, who also sent living specimens to the Zoological Society of London (e.g. Report of the Council of the Zoological Society of London, 1862, p. 23).
[A letter (addressed to Dr. Mueller) from Mr Layard, of the Cape of Good Hope, was read, saying that he had sent forward some Cape pheasants and partridges, and also some small birds, and promising to follow this shipment by another, to consist of red-winged partridges and secretary birds.]
