Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of a meeting of the Horticultural Society of Victoria held on 4 February 1863, in 'Town Talk', Herald (Melbourne), 6 February 1863, p. 5. See J. Toon to M, 24 January 1863 (in this edition as 63-01-24b). Although it is possible that M would have replied as soon as he received Toon's letter, it is dated to February as the latest possible date that it could have been sent to have been read at this meeting.

in the chair. Amongst the correspondence was a letter from Dr. Mueller, agreeing to allow the use of the Botanical Gardens for the society's exhibition on the 28th inst.

That the exhibition would be held on 28 February was only settled at the meeting on 4 February, so the Society's initial request to M, and also his response, must have been framed in general terms. Once the date had been settled, a further letter was sent to M informing him of this; see J. Toon to M, 5 February 1863.
