I have the honor to inform you, that it is my intention to proceed on my journey to
the alpine ranges, for which you were pleased to grant permission, within the next
days. I beg now to solicit your sanction of the following arrangement in regard to
the administration of my establishment during my absence.

Approval for M's request was minuted to this letter and presumably communicated verbally to him. A formal reply was sent to him on 24 December (letter not found). Meanwhile M to J. Moore, 21 December 1862, had reported that if approval were granted, he planned to leave on 22 December.
1 that Mr C. Wilhelmi be entrusted with the duty of carrying out the official correspondence,
clerical work and whatever meanwhile may partain
of my office as Botanist to the Government.

with the practical administration of the horticultural branch of this establishment
