A banquet was held to celebrate the opening of the railway line between Melbourne and Sandhurst (now Bendigo). A special train from Melbourne was organized to bring the Governor and other dignitaries to the event (Age (Melbourne), 21 October 1862, p. 5).
On the arrival of the train, the Municipal Council will be most happy to afford any attention required, and that they may be recognised by strangers, will be distinguished by a badge of green ribbon.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
GEO. AVERY FLETCHER,
Town Clerk.
