I have the honor to inform you, that at a meeting of the Trustees of the Royal Park held on the 14th inst., the duty of acting (until further notice & without renumeration) as Ranger of the Royal Park has been assigned to Mr W. Smith the Superintendent of the zoological garden, and I have been requested by the Trustees to solicit your sanction of this measure and the publication of the bye following notice, bearing on this arrangement, in the Government Gazette

The original of this letter was registered in the Chief Secretary's Department on 21 August 1862 as V62/5515. It was referred to the Board of Land and Works on 28 August annotated: 'Does Mr Hodgkinson see any objection?'. The letter was returned to M via the Chief Secretary's Department on 16 September annotated: 'It is not desirable to Gaz this appt.' (No. 5515, vol. 1862 V, VPRS 1168/P, Public Record Office, Victoria).

16 August was a Saturday. M presumably dated the enclosure to the following Monday in the expectation that that would be when it was dealt with.
It is hereby notified that the Trustees of the Royal Park have appointed Mr W. Smith (the Superintendent of the zoological Garden) to act as Ranger of the Royal Park and to take proceedings against any persons infringing on the rules & regulations established under the authority of the Trustees appointed by the Government for the administration of the Royal Park.
