Kay passed M's letter on to Professor William Wilson, also of the Board of Visitors,
with the recommendation: 'This is worth considering. If the pipes are to be brought
as far as the Military Barracks I think we might put in a claim for extension to the
Observy as a necessity of the observatory & as aiding in bringing the supply to the
Botanical Gardens. Qu'en pensez vous?' [What do you think?].
See also M to W. Wilson, 20 August 1862.
My dear Captain Kay,
It appears, that a 3" pipe of the Yan Yean Aquaeduct is to be forthwith extended to
the New Military Barracks. I would solicit your kind interest & that of the other
members of the Observatory Board for the purpose of obtaining an extension of the
pipe to your observatory ground, where I presume water for safety's sake will be required
and whence it would by the influence of the Board
easily obtained. If you could bring the pipes thus far, I could find this year means
already in my department to extend the waterwork to the botanic Garden.
