MS is a printed certificate, signed by Granville, on which M's name has been entered
in ink.
The list of awards in the jury reports (International Exhibition London, 1862 (1863)) reports M received a medal in Class III, 'Substances used for food', section A 'Agricultural Produce',
with the citation 'for collection of gypsum models of the fruits and vegetables of
the colony. Exceedingly interesting' (p. 9 of report of that class). The corresponding Honourable Mention list for Victoria (p. 13), does not include M. The medal is now at Melbourne Museum, item number
NU 22431, having been lodged in 1872 (see M to W. Vale, 5 September 1872); the Museum catalogue includes an image of this and other medals awarded to M. In the official catalogue (International Exhibition London, 1862 (1862), p. 144.) the exhibit was listed as presented
by the Victorian Exhibition Commissioners
;
M's name was not mentioned.
The Melbourne Museum also has another medal from the exhibition,
NU 33514
, awarded for Class IV.
International Exhibition London, 1862 (1863) gives the
citation 'For a magnificent scientifically-named collection of the woods of the colony'
in
'Animal and vegetable substances used in Manufactures', Section C, 'Vegetable Substances
used in Manufactures'
(p. 49 of the report for that section), The exhibit was catalogued as presented by
'Victorian Exhibition Commissioners'; (International Exhibition London, 1862 (1862),
p. 143)
but included the comment 'collected under the direction of Dr. Mueller. Government
Botanist'
The
Jury included
an extensive report on this exhibit,
with
comments on several species, on p. 36 of this section in
International Exhibition London, 1862 (1863).
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT AN HONOURABLE MENTION WAS AWARDED TO
F. Müller
BY THE INTERNATIONAL JURY FOR CLASS III.
