Cemetery Office
Brighton May 31st 1862
Dr Mueller
Government Botanist
Sir,
I am instructed by the Trustees of the "Brighton General Cemetery" to make application, requesting you to favor them by granting them such Trees & Shrubs as you may be enabled, in order that, with them, they might improve the appearance of the Cemetery for which they are Trustees.
The Cemetery has for a considerable period been in a very neglected condition, owing to the Trustees not having Funds at their disposal for improving it. They feel however that they must make some effort now towards improving its appearance, and trust you will aid them by acceding to their request with your usual liberality evinced towards all Public Institutions.

At the meeting of the Trustees on 30 May 1862, the proposal was put 'That in the event of Dr Mueller declining to accede to the request of the Trustees, the Secretary be instructed to expend the sum of Three Pounds (£3) on Trees & Shrubs' (p. 80). M agreed to the request; see M to S. Simmonds, 2 June 1862 (in this edition as 62-06-02c).
I have the honor to be,
Sir
Your most obedient Servant
S. P. Simmonds
Secretary
