Sir
I have the honor of informing you, that I have been particularly requested by Professor
Dr. A. Petermann, Director of the geographical Institute of Gotha, to enquire on his
behalf, whether you would be pleased to extend to him the favor, which he experiences
from the Survey Departments of most Governments in Europe to be supplied for his geographical
works with a set of such charts journals and other documents bearing on the geography
of your colony as may be available for distribution in your department. On an application
being made to the Surveyor General of this colony, Mr Ligar with great readiness furnished
all charts at the time available at his Office, considering that no better use could
be made of a presentation copy than to place them into the hand of so distinguished
and labourious a geographer, than Dr. Petermann, who moreover as one of the physical
geographers to her Britannic Majesty may have some additional claims on your consideration.
It will afford me great pleasure to forward any contribution you may be pleased to
grant to Dr. Petermann's institute, such donation, as I would respectfully suggest
to be accompanied by an official letter.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient & humble servant
Ferd. Mueller

MS annotation shows that the matter was forwarded to: 'D.S.G. [Deputy Surveyor General?]
25/5/62', leading to an annotation on 28 May 1862: 'Mr Bennett | Landsburg's [i.e.
Landsborough's] Map | Mr. C. Gregory's Survey | Capt. Norman's Sketch', the signature
to this being indecipherable. A further annotation suggests that the Survey Office
forwarded the maps to M on 14 July 1862.
