Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of a meeting of the Council
of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria held on 17 June, in
Age
(Melbourne), 19 June 1862, p. 4. The letter is dated to May on the basis that it is
the likely latest date of the letter as the mails from Calcutta of 9 May arrived in
Melbourne per
Bombay
on 10 June (
Argus
, 11 June 1862, p. 5). The correspondent is given as H. L. Butler, as this is the
person who had correspondence with the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria over the
supply of animals. Acclimatisation Society of Victoria, Council minutes for 17 June
1862 (Unit 1, p. 196, VPRS 2223, Public Record Office, Victoria), confirm that the letter
was addressed to M.

The newspaper account reports that the Council resolved that Butler should be informed
that 'the great desire of the Council is at present only to introduce such animals
as are useful, and have been domesticated in their native country.' See also G. Sprigg
to M, 18 June 1862 (in this edition as 62-06-18a).
