At the Council meeting of 16 July 1862 , Councillor G. Haynes 'mentioned that as he had to proceed to Melbourne in a few days he would be glad to wait upon Dr Mueller and take charge of Trees & Plants for the Botanical Gardens' (Minute book 2; Banner of Belfast , 22 July 1862, p. 3). Haynes duly reported at the Council meeting of 13 August 'that in accordance with his promise he had called on Dr Mueller in Melbourne who had expressed regret at not receiving the letter addressed to him by the Council in May last, but that he would forward a box of young trees seeds &c, and had accordingly done so, and the plants and seeds we r e now in the hands of the Curator of the Gardens [J. Prior]. The Council agreed to allow Prior assistance to have the same properly set out and planted' (Minute book 2).
