editorial addition — March is consistent, given the time taken for mail to travel from Europe to Melbourne,
with M to G. Grey, 30 May 1862, to which this letter is attached. MS appears to be a copy by an
amanuensis, though whether prepared in Copenhagen or Melbourne is not clear; the signature
is not the same as Rafn's signature as this appears on C. Rafn to M, 23 October 1860
and Kongelige Nordiske Oldskrift Selskab to M, 23 October 1860 (in this edition as
60-10-23a).
Dear Sir,
The Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries is highly gratified to observe the interest
evinced in Australia for its undertakings.
I am very glad to see that you also feel a lively interest for our Institute.
It is a great satisfaction to us to have acquired so distinguished cooperators for
the purposes of our institution as His Excellency Sir Henry Barkly, Governor, and
Sir William Foster Stawell, Chief Justice of Victoria.
The interest of Governor Sir George Grey for literary purposes makes one suppose that
a communication from our Society may not be unwelcome to His Excellency.
Hence I beg leave to transmit accounts of our Annual Meetings, also an Extract from
the Statutes of the Society and Lists in Finlandic or Old Northern and in English
of its Founding Fellows or 'Membres Fondateurs'. We would consider it an honor to
elect also, at your proposal, His Excellency Governor Sir George Grey as one of the
Founding Fellows R.S.N.A.
I have the honor to be,
Dear Sir,
your obedient Servant
C. C. Rafn
