[Mr Ferd. Mueller expresses his gratitude to the Society and His Excellency, The Minister of Marine, on the occasion of the dispatch made to him by Mr Hardy of a pair of African ostriches; he announces that unfortunately these animals perished in transit.

At the meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria held on 18 March 1862 (Argus, 22 March 1862, p. 5), M reported that both birds survived the trans-shipment in Egypt, but the female died between Suez and Galle [Sri Lanka] and the male, in good condition when placed on board Northam, died before reaching Melbourne (on 13 March; see Argus, 14 March 1862, p. 4).
