Melbourne botanic & zoologic Garden
22 Jan. 62.
Sir
I have the honor to report to you, that the man Gulliver (in charge of the reserve
between the botanic Garden & the City bridge) detected last night various mobs of
cows in the reserve and was prevented by the owners to impound them. Gulliver however
according to my previous orders followed the men & cows to their dwellings & yards,
so that he will be able to identify them.
May I ask then now your aid to prosecute the perpetrators of these repeated breaches
of public order to be prosecuted by the Crown lands ranger, as it will be impossible
to keep fences & plantations preserved unless energetic measures are adopted to prevent
these not accidental but well-prepared invasions.

In a minute of 22 January 1862, Hodgkinson instructed the Crown Lands Bailiff, N.
M. Bickford to 'immediately see Dr Mueller in order that steps may be at once taken
to
effectually check
the practices complained of'. Bickford replied on 3 February: 'Instructions attended
to. The persons have been summoned before the Bench and fined'.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller
Cl. Hodgkinson Esq.
